Pakistan’s opposition leader Imran Khan has been arrested and detained in custody for eight days following his indictment in a corruption case. This move sparked violent protests across several regions of the country, leading to the deaths of at least seven people. Khan is accused of unlawfully selling state gifts when he was prime minister between 2018-22, and has called the charges politically motivated. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, who deployed troops to quell the unrest, stated that such scenes had never taken place in Pakistan before and warned that perpetrators will be given exemplary punishment. The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for all parties to refrain from violence and to respect the right to peaceful assembly.
