21 Dead in Kyrgyzstan Fires Over Four Months
At least 21 people have died in fires in Kyrgyzstan in the first four months of 2024, according to Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations, Urmatbek Shamyrkanov. This announcement was made during a meeting of Parliament where the statistics for the previous years were also presented.
In 2022, there were 3,137 fires with 29 fatalities, while in 2023, there were 3,498 fires with 35 people losing their lives. These numbers highlight the importance of addressing fire safety measures and ensuring the preparedness of fire and rescue units.
To enhance the level of preparedness among fire and rescue personnel, the Deputy Minister presented a bill proposing amendments to the Law of the Kyrgyz Republic “On Physical Culture and Sports.” The main objective of the bill is to legally establish the framework for organizing events focused on military-applied physical training for firefighters.
One of the key points raised was the need to address the lack of physical training requirements for civilian personnel within fire and rescue units. Currently, civilian personnel do not receive the same level of training as military personnel, leading to potential gaps in their preparedness and capabilities.
After deliberation, the deputies approved the bill in the first reading, signaling a step towards strengthening the training and preparedness of fire and rescue units in Kyrgyzstan. These legislative efforts aim to reduce the number of fire-related fatalities and ensure the effective performance of duties by emergency response personnel.
