Event Celebrates 79th Anniversary of the United Nations in Ashgabat
On October 25, 2024, a special event was held in the UN building in Ashgabat to commemorate the 79th anniversary of the entry into force of the Charter of the United Nations.
The event brought together heads and representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan, as well as leaders and staff members of UN agencies in Ashgabat.
During the event, the focus was on highlighting the important role of the UN as a respected and legitimate international forum, dedicated to maintaining peace and balancing interests in the global arena.
In his address, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Rashid Meredov, emphasized the effectiveness of Turkmenistan’s cooperation with the UN. He mentioned that Turkmenistan had been instrumental in the adoption of 27 resolutions by the UN General Assembly, covering areas such as regional security, peace-building, sustainable development, and climate change challenges.
A notable achievement highlighted at the event was the unanimous adoption of the resolution “Zone of Peace, Trust, and Cooperation of Central Asia” during the 25th plenary meeting of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly. This resolution, initiated by Turkmenistan, was co-sponsored by 37 UN member states, including all neighboring Central Asian countries, as well as Azerbaijan, Iran, and Afghanistan.
The commitment of Turkmenistan to further supporting the humanitarian goals of the UN was reaffirmed during the event. It was also mentioned that preparations were underway for the next meeting of the Strategic Advisory Council “Turkmenistan-United Nations”, where concrete steps for collaboration with the UN in the upcoming period would be discussed.
Overall, the event served as a platform to celebrate the longstanding partnership between Turkmenistan and the United Nations, reflecting their shared commitment to promoting global peace and development.
