The “National Civil Engineering Symposium”, organized for the third time this year by the Chamber of Civil Engineers, is being held at Kyrenia Acapulco Hotel.
Speaking at the opening of the symposium, Abdullah Ekinci, President of the Chamber of Civil Engineers, stated that the symposium will contribute to the participants in constructing safer buildings, especially in the construction industry.

Onur Olguner, President of the Chamber of Architects, also pointed out that the issues to be discussed in the symposium are important in terms of building safety.

Uncle Osman, President of the Turkish Cypriot Subcontractors Association, stated that structural safety in buildings is of great importance and said that everyone in the sector and the institutions that carry out inspections must comply with the building inspection law.

Seran Aysal, President of the Union of Chambers of Turkish Cypriot Engineers and Architects, also stated that in addition to the reality of the earthquake, there are serious infrastructure problems in the country and noted that science should not be compromised in the construction sector.

President of the European Council of Engineers, Andreas Bradner, said that the developments in recent years in construction techniques and the variety of materials used in the construction industry have enabled the construction of higher quality buildings and structures.

Nicosia Mayor Mehmet Harmancı also talked about the work done on the buildings within the scope of the development project.

Mahmut Özçınar, President of the Union of Turkish Cypriot Municipalities, said, “It is our duty to use our country’s resources in a planned and correct manner and to leave a more beautiful country to future generations.”

Republican Turkish Party Secretary General Asım Akansoy made a suggestion to hold a bi-communal earthquake symposium.

He touched upon the importance of the suggestions and opinions offered by the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Architects and Engineers.

Minister of Economy and Energy Olgun Amcaoğlu also touched upon the work carried out by the ministry in order to register the economy.
Reminding that the electronic label application will be put into service on February 1, 2025, Amcaoğlu explained that the application will provide the opportunity to instantly check the products and see their prices.

In his speech, President Ersin Tatar responded to CTP Secretary General Akansoy’s suggestion to hold an earthquake symposium.

Tatar said, “I am always ready to meet with the Greek side on the basis of equality. By establishing a technical committee on earthquakes, we can discuss what might happen in a possible earthquake in the north and south and how we can help each other. We would never go under the umbrella of the Republic of Cyprus and discuss this issue there. Some may do these things, but we cannot do this because our state is the Turkish state of Northern Cyprus, a sovereign state. “Of course, this sovereign Turkish Cypriot state talks and discusses with its interlocutors on every issue, develops policies and can enter into all kinds of cooperation,” he said.

Noting that sensitivity about earthquakes increased after the February 6 earthquake, Tatar pointed out that there is also an earthquake risk on the island of Cyprus.

The President stated that building safety is important in order to be prepared for a possible earthquake disaster, and said that the quality of the buildings to be built and inspections during construction are important in this regard.

Noting that the necessary legal regulations on this issue are in force and that institutions and individuals have great responsibilities in implementation and supervision, Tatar said, “Our children will live in the buildings we build today in the future. “In conscience, we must be more careful and sensitive on this issue,” he said.
