In the Republic Assembly Economy, Finance, Budget and Planning Committee, the Ministry of National Education budget of 16 Billion 700 Million 959 thousand TL and the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) budget of 6 Billion 572 Million 217 thousand TL were approved by majority vote.

The EMU budget, which started to be discussed in the committee on Monday evening and continues today, was voted after the speeches and was accepted with an increase of 210 million TL. Later, the budget of the Ministry of National Education, whose discussion was completed in advance, was passed by the committee by majority vote.

EMU Rector Hasan Kılıç emphasized that the figures regarding the measures and savings points are correct and noted that he can give it in writing and sign it if necessary.

Kılıç said that although there is a shortage of teachers at some points, there is no employment, and gave information about savings measures.

Kılıç stated that savings will be made in areas such as retirement, part-time education, merger of groups, and that it cannot be calculated as if the number of students will not increase.

Minister Çavuşoğlu said that he is an advocate of supporting EMU, but EMU should also take steps.

Stating that EMU stated that it would create a resource of 250 million TL, Çavuşoğlu also presented his proposal for a budget increase.

EMU VYK President Erdal Özcenk said that it is not possible to fire permanent employees and stated that recruitment should not be done in this way from now on.

Özcenk said that there was a weakness in promotion, but the new administration had promotional projects and noted that promotions were made in various countries.

CTP Deputy Erkut Şahali said that there was a linear collapse in EMU and that CTP warned UBP about this many times, pointing out the decrease in student income over the years.

Şahali said that UBP is also responsible for every step taken at EMU since May 2019 and said, “This university will be saved with our joint efforts.”

Expressing that it has been seen that various institutions of this society, other than EMU, have gone bankrupt, Şahali said that there is no need to offend EMU employees.

Şahali stated that CTP will not vote positively for the EMU budget.

Minister Çavuşoğlu said that “populism” is what brought EMU to this point, and that they are aware of their responsibilities regarding EMU.

Çavuşoğlu said that the progress in taking precautions was very slow.

Following the speeches, the EMU budget was passed by the committee by majority vote. Later, the budget of the Ministry of National Education, whose discussion was completed in advance, was also voted and approved by majority vote.

The meeting was adjourned for 10 minutes. After the break, the Ministry of Finance budget of 68 Billion 970 Million 569 thousand TL, the Higher Education Planning, Supervision, Accreditation and Coordination Board (YÖDAK) budget of 62 Million 871 thousand TL and the Revenue budget will be discussed.

The Committee will complete its work by discussing and voting on the entire 2025 Fiscal Year Central State Administration Budget Bill.
