BYD’s Latest Cargo Ship Voyage to Europe.

BYD, the world’s largest new-generation vehicle manufacturer, is expanding its export activities with the launch of its third car carrier ship, the BYD Hefei. This massive ship is capable of transporting up to 7,000 cars at a time and will play a crucial role in BYD’s export drive in China, with its first delivery to Europe scheduled to begin in a few weeks.

The BYD Hefei recently set sail from Guangzhou, marking the third vessel in a planned fleet of eight car carriers. The company’s first cargo ship, the Explorer NO. 1, embarked on its maiden voyage in 2024. The goal for BYD is to increase its export ratio significantly, as its current export volume is relatively low compared to its total production capacity.

Despite facing challenges such as punitive tariffs imposed by the EU on Chinese electric cars, BYD is aiming to strengthen its presence in global markets, particularly in Latin America and Asia. The company plans to sell half of its production abroad by 2030, with the construction of overseas factories like the one in Szeged, Hungary, to cater to regional demand.

In addition to its expansion strategy, BYD is investing in a fleet of advanced car carriers designed to meet stringent emission regulations for maritime transport. The BYD car carriers boast impressive specifications, including a gross vehicle weight of 68,000 tons, a maximum capacity of 7,000 cars, and a cruising speed of 18.5 knots.

To comply with emission standards, the ships will be equipped with liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel tanks as a primary energy source. This sustainable approach aligns with BYD’s commitment to environmental responsibility and innovation in the automotive industry.

As BYD continues to navigate the complexities of global trade and transportation, its fleet of cutting-edge car carriers represents a strategic investment in the company’s future growth and success on the international stage.
