Cabinet opposes death penalty for pedophiles in Constitution amendments

Kyrgyzstan’s Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Edil Baisalov, has spoken out against a proposal put forward by members of the Eldik parliamentary group to amend the Constitution to allow for the death penalty for pedophiles. Baisalov highlighted that the abolition of the death penalty is a fundamental constitutional norm, which has been repeatedly confirmed by a nationwide vote. He stated that it is not a temporary moratorium, but a conscious choice, adding that the Cabinet of Ministers will actively defend the Constitution from such impulsive initiatives. The proposal by the Eldik deputy group is currently being considered by the Constitutional Court, but since capital punishment is prohibited in Kyrgyzstan by the Basic Law, appropriate amendments to the Constitution would need to be made to overcome the ban.
