Cantekin’s Dismissal Deemed a Violation of Freedom of Expression by Human Rights Group
The Middle East Technical University Northern Cyprus Campus Employees Union has come under fire from the Human Rights Platform over the dismissal of its chairman, Kerem Cantekin. The rights group suggests that Cantekin lost his job after issuing a press statement in support of staff members who were previously dismissed from the university at the start of 2023. A disciplinary investigation was opened against Cantekin, for no apparent reason, the group said. The Human Rights Platform also claimed that Cantekin was given a reprimand without respecting the regulations in the disciplinary legislation and the principles of fair trial. The Supreme Administrative Court has since issued an interim order for the disciplinary punishment, dropping the reprimand and allowing Cantekin to continue his work.
