Chinese Woman Poisoned 30 Years Ago Dies, Sparking National Conversation
Zhu Ling, a Chemistry student at Tsinghua University in Beijing, fell victim to a poisoning incident that left her paralyzed, vision impaired, and with brain damage. The highly toxic substance thallium was believed to be the cause of her health issues, leading to a life that required constant care.
The case of Zhu Ling has been a topic of discussion in China for many years, with no legal charges filed against anyone. An investigation was conducted against her classmate and roommate, San Wei, but no concrete evidence led to a lawsuit. San, who changed his name, has maintained his innocence through social media posts.
Zhu first exhibited symptoms of abdominal pain and hair loss in late 1994, eventually falling into a coma a few months later. Medical professionals concluded that thallium poisoning was the cause. While suspicions initially fell on San, it was later revealed that other students also had access to the toxic substance on campus.
Zhu Ling’s family alleged that San was jealous of their daughter’s beauty and academic success, pointing to him as the perpetrator. Despite their claims, no conclusive evidence was obtained from the investigation. After San Wei moved to the United States, Zhu Ling’s relatives started a petition for his deportation, citing his family’s political connections as a means of escaping accountability.
In 2013, the Beijing Public Security Bureau stated that the investigation had been conducted thoroughly and announced that the case would not be reopened due to the time that had passed and the lack of substantial evidence. Sadly, Zhu Ling passed away 30 years after the incident, at the age of 50.
The tragic story of Zhu Ling remains a case of unresolved justice, leaving the public with unanswered questions and concerns about the handling of the investigation.
