Cittaslow Event Held in Yeniboğaziçi, Promoting Slow Living and Sustainability
Yeniboğaziçi Municipality Celebrates 10th Anniversary of Cittaslow Movement
The Yeniboğaziçi Municipality recently organized the “Cittaslow Yeniboğaziçi 10th Anniversary event” to commemorate a decade of promoting the slow city and mother earth movement. The event, which also celebrated Mother Earth Day, took place in Selim Park and featured a wide array of activities and speeches.
Erşen Ummanel, representing Cittaslow Yeniboğaziçi Village Market, kicked off the event with an opening speech praising the efforts of producer women who prepared various foods for the occasion. The importance of the cittaslow and slow food movement was underlined by Umut Kurşun, President of Slow Food Salamis, in his speech at the event.
Dr. Ali Öztüren, Dean of the Eastern Mediterranean University Faculty of Tourism, highlighted the significance of the slow city concept in enhancing the quality of life in urban areas. Yeniboğaziçi Mayor Katip Demir emphasized the municipality’s commitment to standing out for its tourism values and not just for its tall buildings, stating that Yeniboğaziçi is known in 33 countries worldwide.
The event also featured a speech by Fikri Ataoğlu, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Environment, who expressed his support for keeping the village market in Yeniboğaziçi Park open daily. He also announced plans to provide producers with opportunities to sell their products at tourist hotspots in an effort to promote local goods.
Apart from the speeches, the event included an art workshop and halloumi workshop for children. Retro Musicians entertained the audience with live performances, and a village market with souvenir stands added to the festive atmosphere.
The “Cittaslow Yeniboğaziçi 10th Anniversary event” exemplified a successful collaboration between local authorities, community members, and various organizations dedicated to promoting sustainable living and preserving local traditions.
