In a recent video press release, TZOB Chairman Şemsi Bayraktar emphasized the importance of the struggle against the brown kokarca pest in agricultural areas. Bayraktar highlighted the significant damage caused by the brown smell in the Black Sea and Marmara regions, affecting over 300 vegetable products.
Addressing the urgency of the situation, Bayraktar stressed the need for continuous and effective measures to protect plant products from the harmful effects of the brown smell. He explained that as air temperatures rise, the pest spreads to agricultural areas, causing widespread damage.
Bayraktar recommended a combination of public health disinfection and mechanical destruction methods for an efficient struggle against the brown kokarca. However, he acknowledged challenges such as controlling pests outside agricultural areas and insufficient participation from some farmers in the region.
To combat the invasion of the brown smell and minimize losses in hazelnut production, Bayraktar called for coordinated efforts among the governor’s office, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, municipalities, and other relevant institutions. He emphasized the importance of implementing the “Brown Socarca Action Plan,” which includes farmer training, trap hanging, natural enemy insect production, and mechanical struggle methods.
Bayraktar emphasized the need to act swiftly in the fight against the brown smell, urging all stakeholders to work together to prevent further spread of the pest. He concluded by emphasizing the importance of protecting all herbal products from the detrimental effects of the brown smell through continuous and comprehensive measures.
