Cultural Exchange: Hungarian and Chinese Traditions Flourish in Mutual Interest
Hungary Continues to Strengthen Cultural Ties with China
The Government of Hungary reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing Hungarian-Chinese cultural relations during a ceremony held in Budapest to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year. Minister of Culture and Innovation, Balázs Hankó, emphasized the significance of the Spring Festival, China’s most important traditional holiday rooted in ancient customs.
Last year marked the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Hungary and China, highlighted by the opening of the Liszt Institute in Beijing and the Chinese Cultural Center in Budapest. These milestones demonstrate mutual trust and long-term cooperation between the two nations, providing a renewed boost to Hungarian-Chinese cultural ties.
Hankó noted the increasing prominence of Hungarian and Chinese culture in both countries, with numerous cultural events showcasing their richness. The growing interest in Chinese language and culture in Hungary further illustrates the success of the Confucius Institutes in Budapest.
Hungarian universities and research institutes are forging closer partnerships with Chinese counterparts, particularly in innovation, health, and sustainable development. The Hungarian-Chinese Bilingual Primary School and Secondary School stands out as the sole institution in Central and Eastern Europe offering full-time education in Hungarian and Chinese concurrently.
Collaboration extends to language programs in Chinese universities, with fourteen institutions providing Hungarian courses and engaging in student and teacher exchanges with Hungarian higher education. Plans are underway for the inaugural joint Sino-Hungarian rectors’ forum and the launch of a joint engineering training program in Szeged.
Chinese Ambassador Gong Tao affirmed that Sino-Hungarian relations are thriving in a “golden age” and projects continued fruitful outcomes in 2025. The deepening cultural and educational exchanges between Hungary and China reflect a shared commitment to mutual understanding and cooperation.
