Customs Officers Thwart Gold and Chinese Coin Smuggling Attempt at Tashkent Airport
Customs officers at Tashkent International Airport have recently made a significant interception, uncovering an attempt to smuggle valuable items out of the country. The passenger in question was found to be carrying gold bars, a gold ring, and Chinese-engraved coins, all hidden in a cosmetic cream container.
The total value of the intercepted items is estimated to be around 223 million UZS, which is approximately $18,800. The discovery was made during a routine baggage inspection, and the Customs Committee has confirmed that none of the items had been declared for customs control as required.
The inspection revealed six gold bars weighing a total of 187 grams, seven Chinese-inscribed coins, and a 20-gram gold ring, all concealed within the passenger’s hand luggage. As a result of this discovery, the items were confiscated, and a criminal investigation has been launched by the authorities.
It is important to note that Uzbekistan’s regulations allow individuals to transport jewelry items valued up to 100 million UZS without a declaration. However, any items valued over this amount must be declared, and cultural artifacts that are more than 50 years old cannot be exported from the country.
This incident serves as a reminder of the strict customs regulations in place to prevent illegal activities such as smuggling. Customs officials continue to be vigilant in their efforts to ensure the security and integrity of the country’s borders.
