Damla Soyalp’s Gift of Life: A Daughter’s Organ Donation to Her Mother
The importance of organ donation in saving lives
Organ transplantation is a life-saving procedure that gives hope to many individuals suffering from organ failure. The only hope for those waiting for organ transplants is organ donors who selflessly offer their organs to those in need.
In the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), kidney and heart transplants have been performed since the implementation of the Cell Tissue and Organ Transplantation Law in 2014. Since then, around 70 kidney and 5 heart transplants have been successfully completed.
One heartwarming story comes from Damla Soyalp, a dedicated employee at BRT, who donated her kidney to her mother, Mediha Çerkezler. Mediha had been battling kidney disease for 32 years and was surviving with only 30% kidney function. Thanks to the transplant, she now has a new lease on life and a chance to live fully.
Both Damla and Mediha stress the importance of organ donation in providing hope to patients waiting for transplants. They highlight the support they received from doctors and nurses throughout the process, emphasizing the life-changing impact of organ donation.
Nephrology and Kidney Transplant Center Organ Transplantation Coordinator, Meral Yükseliş, underscores the significance of organ transplantation as a second chance at renewed health and the opportunity for patients to embrace their loved ones once again. It is crucial for organ donation to be embraced widely by society to save more lives.
Although the TRNC has made strides in organ transplantation, there is still a need to increase donations, especially from brain-dead cadavers. Organ transplantation is a medical miracle that transforms lives and offers hope to those in need of vital organs.
The successful kidney transplant between Damla and Mediha is a testament to the power of organ donation in changing lives. Both individuals are now on the path to recovery and are grateful for the second chance at life they have been given.
Organ donation is not only a health miracle but also a social responsibility. Citizens are encouraged to consider becoming organ donors to save lives and give hope to those in need. With more individuals stepping forward to donate organs, we can create a brighter future for patients awaiting transplantation.
