Wildfires Reignite in Southeastern South Korea
Wildfires have reignited in the southeastern part of South Korea, fire authorities confirmed on Saturday. Firefighting helicopters have been dispatched to extinguish the flames, according to reports from Yonhap.
The ongoing fires have already scorched approximately 48,000 hectares of woodland, which is equivalent to about 80 percent of the size of Seoul. This marks the worst wildfire disaster in South Korea’s history, as stated by the forestry agency.
The Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters reported that the death toll from the fires has reached 30, with 40 individuals sustaining injuries. Additionally, 6,885 people from 4,193 households have been unable to return home since evacuating.
In response to the crisis, approximately 55.4 billion won ($37.7 million) has been collected in donations through relief organizations. The authorities are working tirelessly to contain the wildfires and ensure the safety of affected residents.
The situation remains critical as efforts continue to battle the wildfires and assist those impacted by the devastation.
