Deputy Minister Reveals Kyrgyzstan’s Water Allocation to Neighboring Nations
On October 28, 2024, the Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry of Kyrgyzstan, Almazbek Sokeyev, provided updates on the water distribution to neighboring countries during a meeting of the Committee on Agrarian Policy, Water Resources, Ecology, and Regional Development of the Parliament.
This year, Kazakhstan received 138 million cubic meters of water from the Chui region and 420 million cubic meters of water from the Kirov reservoir in Talas region. The agreement dictates that during the growing season, 80 percent of the water is kept by Kyrgyzstan, and 20 percent is provided to Kazakhstan. During other times, 58 percent of the water remains in Kyrgyzstan, while 42 percent is allocated to Kazakhstan.
In 2024, Uzbekistan received 6 billion cubic meters of water from Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan also benefits from water resources from the country. Overall, the total flow of water in Kyrgyzstan amounts to 47 billion cubic meters, with 12 billion cubic meters staying within the Kyrgyz Republic while the rest is shared with neighboring states.
It is clear that water management and distribution among countries in the region are crucial for maintaining stability and sustainable development. Almazbek Sokeyev’s update sheds light on the important role that Kyrgyzstan plays in providing water resources to its neighbors while ensuring its own water security.
