Discussing Economic and Social Affairs with UN Under-Secretary-General
Turkmenistan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rashid Meredov, led a delegation to meet with the UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, Li Jinhua, during the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York on September 30, 2024.
The meeting highlighted the successful cooperation between Turkmenistan and the UN across various areas. Turkmenistan reiterated its full support and active participation in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, both nationally and internationally. The country has established internal mechanisms to provide annual reports on monitoring the progress of the Sustainable Development Goals to the government.
The UN Friendship Games Resolution, initiated by Turkmenistan, was also a key topic of discussion during the meeting. The parties explored collaborative activities to put the provisions of the resolution into action.
Furthermore, the participation of Turkmenistan in the “Future Summit” at the UN headquarters in New York on September 22-23, 2024 was emphasized. The significance of Turkmenistan’s chairmanship at one of the Summit sessions was highlighted.
Joint initiatives were also discussed, including consultations on the development of the Atlas of Transport Sustainability for the UN Decade on Sustainable Transport 2026-2035 implementation plan and the upcoming International Meeting of UN Experts on Energy Connectivity scheduled for October in Ashgabat.
Overall, the meeting underscored Turkmenistan’s commitment to sustainable development goals and its active engagement with the United Nations in advancing socio-economic cooperation.
