Double Duty: Mongolia’s Unique Economic Approach
Mongolia’s government is taking a strategic approach to drive economic reform, balancing tough anti-corruption measures with pro-business initiatives. On one side, populist politician Jalbasurengiin Batzandan of the Democratic Party is leading the charge against corruption in the mining sector. Appointed as the Government’s Plenipotentiary Representative under the National Wealth Fund Law, Batzandan is targeting oligarchs who acquired mineral deposits through illegal means in the 1990s and early 2000s. His outspoken and independent stance is like a bull in a china shop, shaking up entrenched interests.
On the other side is Prime Minister Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene, who takes a more measured and investor-friendly approach. Together, these two leaders are orchestrating a “bad cop, good cop” strategy to drive economic reform in Mongolia. This dual strategy aims to root out corruption while creating a more business-friendly environment for investors.
