Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is optimistic about securing billions of euros for his country’s defense and postwar reconstruction at the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Berlin. The two-day conference, hosted by Germany, aims to plan Ukraine’s recovery once the war, sparked by Russia’s full-scale invasion, comes to an end.
Zelenskiy emphasized the urgent need for financial support, especially for defense and energy systems, highlighting the destructive impact of Russian attacks on Ukraine’s electricity generation capacity. With half of the country’s capacity destroyed, Ukraine is facing challenges in providing essential services to its citizens.
In response to the ongoing Russian aggression, Zelenskiy called for increased air-defense systems to counter Russian advances and ensure lasting peace. Germany, as the second-largest supplier of military equipment to Ukraine after the United States, has pledged additional support, including Patriot missiles and drones.
The conference also addressed the issue of the Azov Brigade, a controversial Ukrainian military unit known for its effective defense but also accused of human rights violations. The United States lifted restrictions on providing weapons and training to the brigade, citing no evidence of gross human rights violations by the unit.
As international support for Ukraine grows, discussions at the G7 meeting in Italy and a peace summit in Switzerland will focus on providing financial assistance to Kyiv. NATO’s Bucharest Nine leaders have committed to a more coordinated approach in supporting Ukraine, while Russian forces continue their attacks on Ukrainian targets, causing casualties and damage.
The road to recovery for Ukraine is long and challenging, but with the commitment of allies and ongoing support, the country is determined to rebuild and secure a peaceful future.
