
EMU Physics Department receives telescope donation from Foundations Administration

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) in Cyprus recently held a plaque presentation ceremony to thank İbrahim F. Benter, the General Manager of Cyprus Foundations Administration (EVKAF), for his support. The Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of Physics at EMU obtained a total of four astronomy telescope parks with the help of three telescopes from EVKAF. Staff and students at the university attended the ceremony, including EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Aykut Hocanın, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Dr. Hasan Demirel, and Head of Physics and Chemistry Departments Prof. Dr. İzzet Sakallı.
During the ceremony, various speakers highlighted the importance of science and education. EMU Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Özarslan noted that EMU Physics Department is the only program in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus that offers undergraduate education in physics in English. Meanwhile, EVKAF General Manager Prof. Dr. İbrahim F. Benter praised the university for developing a system of education and research that has yielded results, despite facing financial challenges.
After the speeches, EMU Physics Department Distinguished Professor Prof. Dr. Mustafa Halilsoy gave information about solar flares and how they impact the world. Following this, the university presented a plaque of appreciation to Benter on behalf of EMU and EVKAF. The attendees also had the chance to use the new telescope installed in the research laboratories’ garden to observe the sun.
EMU is a state university that prides itself on providing quality education and competing internationally. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings placed the university in the 501-600 band, making it the second-highest ranked across the island of Cyprus. During the ceremony, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Aykut Hocanın emphasised that EMU is one of the most important institutions serving in the TRNC, and its vision is the biggest project of the Turkish Cypriot people and a window to the world. Through this partnership with EVKAF, the university can continue to offer quality education in science and technology.
