Extension of Visa-Free Travel to Mongolia for South Korean Citizens

The Mongolian government has announced an extension of the visa-free travel period for Korean citizens visiting Mongolia for tourism purposes. Originally issued in 2022, the temporary permission allowed Korean citizens to travel without a visa until December 2024. This permission has now been extended until December 31, 2025, providing a boost to Mongolia’s tourism market.

However, it is important to note that Korean citizens traveling to Mongolia for work, study, or long-term residence will still need to obtain the appropriate visa. According to the Immigration agency of Mongolia, as of December 5, 2024, there are 32,543 foreigners from 132 countries registered for official and private residence in the country. Among these numbers, there are 1,511 citizens from the US, 1,776 citizens from the Republic of Korea, 17,849 citizens from China, 4,424 citizens from Russia, and 6,983 citizens from other countries.

These foreign citizens residing in Mongolia are classified according to their purpose, with 644 residing for official purposes, 14,006 for work, 6,227 for study, 2,852 for investment, 1,779 as migrants, 50 for religious purposes, and 6,985 for family and other private purposes.

With the extension of the visa-free travel period for Korean tourists and the diverse range of foreign citizens residing in Mongolia, the country’s tourism market is expected to experience growth by 2025.
