Güven Bengihan, President of the Federation of Cyprus and Workers’ Unions Federation (KIEF) and Turkish Cypriot Public Officials Union (KTAMS), has raised concerns about the safety conditions at Ercan Airport. He also pointed out that essential elements of the aviation system at the airport lack proper backups, the radars are not functioning correctly, and the lights in the underpass below the runway are not working.
Bengihan expressed serious concerns about the security risks posed by these deficiencies and criticized the government for failing to ensure proper maintenance agreements since the airport was handed over to a private company. He emphasized that the responsibility for any accidents or losses of life at Ercan Airport would ultimately lie with the government.
In light of these alarming safety issues, Bengihan called for immediate action to address the shortcomings and ensure the safety of passengers and staff at Ercan Airport. He urged the government to prioritize the necessary maintenance and upgrades to prevent any potential disasters.
The President of KIEF and KTAMS reiterated his warning that the government’s negligence in addressing these safety concerns could have grave consequences.
