Foreign Minister Ertuğruloğlu Blames International Community for Cyprus Problem
Minister of Foreign Affairs Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu Speaks at International Strategic Communication Summit
Minister of Foreign Affairs Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu recently spoke at the International Strategic Communication Summit, focusing on the theme “Artificial Intelligence in Communication: Trends, Traps and Transformation.” Organized by the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey for the fourth time, the summit addressed key issues in communication, particularly regarding the Cyprus problem.
During his speech, Ertuğruloğlu emphasized that the international community itself played a role in creating the Cyprus problem and that there are misconceptions surrounding the issue. He highlighted the difficulties faced by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in combating misinformation campaigns related to Cyprus.
Ertuğruloğlu pointed out that many countries, with the exception of Turkey, recognize the Republic of Cyprus as a state comprised solely of Greek Cypriots. He shed light on the history of the Cyprus issue, explaining how the political equality between Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots was compromised in the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus in 1960.
Furthermore, Ertuğruloğlu criticized international organizations such as the United Nations and the European Union for misrepresenting the Cyprus problem to the global community. He stated that these entities have failed to accurately define the issue, leading to further complications and challenges for the TRNC.
The Minister highlighted the lack of representation and voice given to the Turkish Cypriot people on the international stage, emphasizing the need for truth and transparency in communication efforts. He expressed the TRNC’s interest in utilizing artificial intelligence, strategic communication, and digital diplomacy to effectively address the misinformation campaigns surrounding Cyprus.
Despite the ongoing communication efforts of the TRNC, Ertuğruloğlu acknowledged the hurdles posed by the international community’s reluctance to acknowledge the realities of Cyprus. He stressed the importance of political will in addressing the Greek Cypriots’ actions and ensuring a fair and just resolution to the Cyprus problem.
In conclusion, Ertuğruloğlu reaffirmed the shared heritage of Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots on the island of Cyprus, emphasizing the need for mutual understanding and respect. He called for a collaborative effort to shed light on the historical context of Cyprus and to work towards a peaceful and inclusive future for all inhabitants of the island.
