Former Nagorno-Karabakh Leaders Stand Trial in Baku

After more than a year in pre-trial detention, the trial of 16 people, including former leaders of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, has begun in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The defendants are facing charges related to their alleged involvement in the six-week war between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the region of Nagorno-Karabakh in late 2020. The conflict resulted in thousands of deaths and displacement of civilians.
The trial is expected to shed light on the events leading up to and during the war, as well as possible war crimes committed by both sides. It is also seen as a test of Azerbaijan’s commitment to upholding human rights and the rule of law.
The Nagorno-Karabakh region has been a source of tension between Azerbaijan and Armenia for decades, with both countries claiming it as their own. The conflict escalated in 2020, leading to a ceasefire brokered by Russia.
The trial in Baku is being closely watched by international human rights organizations and the global community. It remains to be seen how the proceedings will unfold and what implications they will have for the future of the region and its people.
