Former President Áder emphasizes water crisis is worsened by regional and global rivalry
Former President János Áder delivered a powerful speech addressing the critical issue of water supply crisis at the 10th World Water Forum in Bali. He emphasized the urgent need for action in light of the rivalry between regional and global powers, highlighting the deteriorating state of soil, water, and air as the most crucial natural resources.
Áder referenced a study by the FAO which predicted severe soil degradation by 2050 and a decrease in the availability of clean water per capita, despite a growing global population. He expressed disappointment over the lack of progress in reducing carbon dioxide emissions and improving air quality since the signing of the climate agreement in Paris.
Furthermore, Áder highlighted the alarming statistic that 80 percent of the world’s sewage remains untreated, leaving 2 billion people without access to clean water. He also pointed out the significant impact of plastic waste on the world’s oceans, emphasizing the need for immediate action to address these pressing environmental challenges.
Despite discussions at the forum about the importance of water and the looming crisis, Áder expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of declarations without tangible solutions. He noted that while technology exists to combat these issues, a lack of political will and funding continue to hinder progress.
