Global Musical Journey at House of Music
A new temporary exhibition titled “LISTEN. – Musical Journey Around the World” has opened at the House of Music Hungary. The exhibition showcases the diverse musical traditions of different cultures around the globe and is based on a series of music documentaries. It will be open to the public until the end of August.
András Batta, Managing Director of House of Music Hungary, highlighted the essence of the exhibition, which is based on the idea that music is not just a part of culture but a complete and integral culture in itself. The exhibition, spread across 1,000 square meters, allows visitors to explore the music of various peoples and ethnic groups.
The exhibition emphasizes how different cultures come together through music, influencing and transforming each other over time. Hungarian musicians Bartók and Kodály’s contributions in preserving and popularizing folk music of the Carpathian Basin were also acknowledged.
The exhibition features installations, visuals, photographs, and musical instruments gathered from nearly 30 countries over a span of ten years. Visitors can learn about ancient Lithuanian musical traditions, traditional choirs in Corsica and Iceland, the music of Patagonian shepherds, and the impact of migration on Central American music.
American filmmaker Garry Bassin, who collaborated with Japanese actor-producer-writer Tomoko Yamaguchi on the “Listen.” project, described it as a musical time capsule of the planet. The series captures human emotions conveyed through music from India to Europe to Alaska.
The exhibition is a unique blend of film and music, offering a storytelling experience that travels through different countries and cultures. It portrays the unity of core emotions and motivations shared by people through music across time and space.
The exhibition at the House of Music Hungary provides a fascinating insight into the universal language of music and its profound impact on human culture and society. It is a must-visit for music enthusiasts and those interested in exploring the rich diversity of global musical traditions.
