Hand in Hand for a Green Future: Afforestation Festival Organized by BRTK

An afforestation festival was recently held at the Turkish Cypriot Forces Regiment (KTKA) in Ortaköy, Nicosia, with a collaboration between the Near East University (NEU) and the Turkish Cypriot Peace Forces Command. The event, which carried the slogan “Hand in hand to a green future”, saw the planting of 3 thousand trees including cypress, red pine, parkinsonian, orange, lemon, and tangerine saplings. This initiative, attended by President Ersin Tatar and Turkish Ambassador Yesin Ekrem Serim and his family, increased the total number of trees within the KTKA area to 8 thousand.

The festivities commenced at 11:00 with a moment of silence and the National Anthem, followed by speeches from KTKA Commander P. Kur and President Tatar. Information about the saplings and planting procedures was provided by Alb. Ali Karakaş. Participants then planted the saplings and took a group photo to commemorate the event.

Notable attendees at the event included the Main Opposition Republican Turkish Party Chairman Tufan Erhürman, Turkish Cypriot Peace Forces Commander Major General Sebahattin Kılınç, and other military officials and their families, as well as students from NEU and Eastern Primary School. Various associations, institutions, organizations, military families, and other guests also took part in this green initiative.

In his address after the planting, President Tatar expressed gratitude to all those involved in making the event a success. He emphasized the importance of protecting the environment, soil, and forests, while also urging caution against climate change. Tatar encouraged individuals to plant at least one tree in their garden and highlighted the significance of instilling a culture of afforestation in future generations.

The recent afforestation efforts, particularly around the new Parliament and Presidential campus and in the KTKA area, were noted by Tatar as contributions to both the social life of the people and the history of Cyprus. The event concluded with refreshments being served to the guests, marking a successful step towards a greener and more sustainable future.
