HIV-positive cases on the rise in Uzbekistan since 2020

More Than 48,000 People Living with HIV in Uzbekistan

According to a press conference held with the participation of the Committee on Sanitary-Epidemiological Peace and Public Health, the leadership, and officials of the Republican AIDS Center at AIMC, more than 48,000 people are living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Uzbekistan. The country has taken measures to address the issue, such as the transfer of HIV diagnostic laboratories to AIDS control centers and the establishment of places for HIV patients serving from five to forty places in each region.

In the last five years, the number of HIV tests has significantly increased from 700,000 to 3.5 million, or 5 times. The report stated that the governmental financing of medicines was 80%. Also, social allowances are being given to HIV-infected children under the age of 18, and continuous supply of dry milk mixtures is carried out to the children born to sick mothers every year to stop mother-to-child transmission of HIV infection. As a result, 99.7% of children are healthy.

The report showed that 3,289 infection cases were recorded in Uzbekistan as of 2021, with a total of 45,296 people. The figures for 2013 to 2022 revealed that 2,817 people in 2020, 3,289 people in 2021, and 3,889 people in 2022 were diagnosed with this disease in the country.

It is planned that by 2027, 95% of people infected with HIV in Uzbekistan will know their status, will be covered by special treatment courses, and 95% will have an undetectable viral load in their blood. By this time, it is also planned to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV. Uzbekistan’s efforts to tackle HIV and its projected goals are commendable, and it is hoped that they will achieve them with determination and support.
