Honoring Hungarian Cities in Prestigious Environmental Architecture Competition

Debrecen and Zalakaros Shine at Entente Florale Europe 2024

Debrecen, located in eastern Hungary, took home the silver medal while Zalakaros, situated in western Hungary, was awarded the gold at the prestigious Entente Florale Europe 2024 competition. The award ceremony for one of the most distinguished European contests in the realm of environmental architecture was held on September 7 in Székesfehérvár, as reported by Turizmus.com.

A total of 11 municipalities from 7 different countries participated in this year’s European competition for “floral towns and villages.” Alongside representatives from Velenje in Slovenia, Miercurea Ciuc (Csíkszereda) in Romania, Vlčany (Farkasd) in Slovakia, as well as Carlow and Ballinahown in Ireland, Meinheim and Höxter in Germany, and Písek and Chorušice in the Czech Republic, Hungary showcased the winners of the “Flowery Hungary 2022 Grand Prize” – Debrecen and Zalakaros.

The judging process focused on evaluating the municipalities’ efforts in green management, climate adaptation, environmental education, and public engagement.

The announcement of the results took place on September 7 at Székesfehérvár’s Sóstó Stadium in central Hungary. The event brought together nearly 160 city leaders and professionals in green space management from the participating municipalities. In addition to discovering Székesfehérvár, which had previously secured a gold medal and a special award for good practices, attendees could explore the traditions, attractions, and traditional cuisine of the competing municipalities at the Europe Market organized at Sóstó.

Entente Florale Europe, established in 1975, aims to promote European municipalities and spread the principles of livability and sustainability on a wider scale. Hungary became the first Central and Eastern European nation to join the competition in 1990 and has consistently performed well since.

The Entente Florale Europe competition serves as a platform for showcasing innovative environmental initiatives and fostering a sense of community among European towns and villages dedicated to sustainability and green living. Congratulations to Debrecen and Zalakaros for their outstanding achievements in the 2024 edition of the competition!
