Hungarian Foreign Minister Raises Alarm over Troubling Middle East Situation
Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó expressed growing concern on Monday about the escalating situation in the Middle East. In a statement on Facebook, Szijjártó revealed that he had recently spoken with both the Israeli and Iranian foreign ministers. He emphasized the urgent need for the international community to focus on preventing further escalation of the conflict, which he warned could potentially lead to a regional war and pose a threat to global security.
Szijjártó reiterated Hungary’s stance on the issue, stating that while Israel must be protected from terrorist attacks like the one last October, efforts must also be made to prevent the outbreak of a larger regional conflict. The situation in the Middle East has already had repercussions in Hungary, with flights being suspended at Budapest Airport due to the unrest.
Additionally, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s recent divergence from the EU’s position on Israel has caused further controversy. Orbán’s rejection of a statement regarding Israel has isolated Hungary within the EU on this matter.
