Illegal Betting Investigation: Mehmet Ali Erbil’s Penalty Revealed
Famous Turkish artist Mehmet Ali Erbil has recently made headlines as he was detained on charges of encouraging illegal betting. However, during his statement at the prosecutor’s office, he was referred to the Magistrates’ Court of Magistrates where the judge ultimately decided to put him under house arrest.
The Istanbul 20th Criminal Court of First Instance held a hearing today regarding Erbil’s case, although the artist himself did not attend. Instead, his lawyer represented him and announced the court’s decision. The court took into consideration Erbil’s social state, purpose, and intent before deciding to postpone the penalty of 10 months imprisonment and a thousand TL judicial fine. Additionally, the court removed the judicial control that prohibited Erbil from leaving the country.
During the hearing, Erbil made a defense stating that he was invited to a hotel in Malta where he was asked to participate in a live broadcast for a site that turned out to be an illegal betting platform. He claimed that he was unaware of the nature of the site and only intended to help people in need. Erbil went on to explain that he did not participate in any bets and only found out about the illegal activities after the people in the video he appeared in filed a criminal complaint against him.
