Isias Hotel Collapse Linked to Non-compliance with Earthquake Regulations, BRTK Report Reveals
Expert Report Reveals Causes of İsias Hotel Collapse
A recent expert report on the collapse of İsias Hotel has shed light on the reasons behind the tragic incident. According to the report, the building did not collapse sideways due to the hammering effect, as previously believed. Instead, it was determined that the building collapsed towards the front, specifically towards Atatürk Boulevard.
The report emphasized that the collapse was not due to earthquake force, as previously claimed. Spectral acceleration values on the parcel where the building was located did not exceed the design acceleration values specified in the 1998 Earthquake Regulation. It was noted that if the building had been constructed in compliance with the regulation, it would not have collapsed during the earthquake.
One of the significant flaws identified in the report was the construction of an elevator without proper static calculations, leading to a gap in the hollow block floor. The report highlighted deficiencies in manufacturing, construction, and inspection as key factors contributing to the collapse.
The report also implicated all defendants, especially Ahmet Bozkurt, in the incident. The roles of Architect Erdem Yıldız, civil engineer Mehmet Göncüoğlu, and civil engineer Hasan Aslan were also revealed in the report.
The report, prepared by a committee from Dokuz Eylül University and Istanbul Technical University, was hailed as the most comprehensive analysis of the incident to date. Previous reports from KTÜ and Gazi University were also considered in the investigation.
In conclusion, the expert report has provided crucial insights into the collapse of İsias Hotel, highlighting the importance of proper construction practices and adherence to building regulations. The findings will guide further investigations into the incident and help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
