“Israel Violates Ceasefire, Conducts Strikes in Gaza”
Despite a ceasefire being reached on 21 May between Israel and Palestinian groups, Israeli planes continued to carry out strikes on Gaza. The Israeli army stated that the strikes targeted rocket launchers belonging to Islamic Jihad, in response to rockets fired from Gaza. The ceasefire was mediated by Egypt and includes an end to the targeting of civilians and the destruction of civilian settlements. The conflict began on 9 May when the Israeli army launched an attack on Gaza, claiming to target the leadership of the Islamic Jihad Movement. Since then, 33 Palestinians have been killed and 93 have been injured. In response, Palestinian groups fired over a thousand rockets and mortar shells into Israel, killing one Israeli. The situation remains tense and unpredictable as the ceasefire is tested.
