Kazakh Chess Players Dominate with Record Medal Haul in 2024
Kazakh Chess Players Shine with Record 160 Medals in International Tournaments
Kazakh chess players have made their mark in the international chess arena, winning a record 160 medals last year at official tournaments of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and the Asian Chess Federation (ACF). The impressive haul included 55 gold, 54 silver, and 51 bronze medals, showcasing the talent and dedication of the Kazakh chess community.
One of the standout achievements of the year was the women’s national team’s silver medal at the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest. The young team, with an average age of 18.5 years, clinched the second spot in a competitive field. National team leader Bibisara Assaubayeva also had a successful year, finishing second at the 2024/25 Women’s Grand Prix in Tbilisi and third in Shymkent. Her stellar performances have put her at the top of the overall standings, earning her a spot in the World Championship Candidates Tournament.
In the junior category, Kazakh players excelled at the World Classical Chess Championships, winning a total of eight medals. Notable achievements include gold medals for Kazybek Nogerbek (U20), Mark Smirnov (U12), and Alanna Berikkyzy (U10). Silver and bronze medals were also secured by talented young players, highlighting the depth of talent in Kazakhstan’s junior chess scene.
These remarkable achievements were made possible with the support of two grant programs—Support for the National Team and Support for Young Talents—amounting to almost 1 billion tenge (US$1.9 million) this year. President of the Kazakhstan chess federation Timur Turlov expressed gratitude for the hard work of the federation’s team and the unwavering support from the country’s leadership and President.
The success of Kazakh chess players on the global stage is a testament to their skill, dedication, and the strong foundation of support provided by the chess community and the nation as a whole. As they continue to excel in international competitions, the future looks bright for chess in Kazakhstan.
