Kazakh Khan Genealogy Manuscript Added to UNESCO Memory of World Register

The manuscript “Khandar Shezhiresi” (“Genealogy of the Khans”), dating back to the 18th century, has been officially recognized and inscribed in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register. This significant announcement was made by State Counselor Erlan Karin on April 17th through his Telegram channel.

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has urged the preservation of Kazakhstan’s unique documentary heritage, instructing the enhancement of activities in this regard during the fourth meeting of the National Kurultai (Congress) held on March 14th in Burabai.

Describing the “Khandar Shezhiresi” as a scroll over three meters long, Karin highlighted that it traces the genealogy of the rulers of the Kazakh steppes. Not only does it showcase their deep historical roots, but it also provides insights into their connections with other peoples and civilizations from the sixth to the 19th centuries.

This inscription adds the “Khandar Shezhiresi” to a prestigious list of documents in the UNESCO register, which already includes manuscripts of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, archival materials from the Nevada-Semipalatinsk International Anti-Nuclear Movement, and archival funds related to the Aral Sea.

The recognition of the “Khandar Shezhiresi” on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register is a testament to the rich cultural and historical heritage of Kazakhstan, further highlighting the importance of preserving and celebrating the country’s legacy for future generations.
