Kazakh National Bank Unveils New Coin Collection Honoring Nation’s Heritage
The National Bank of Kazakhstan (NBK) has recently introduced a new series of collectible coins titled “Shanyragynyz shattyqqa tolsyn” (Peace to Your Home) as a part of the From Heart-to-Heart collection. These coins embody the concept of peace and warmth within the household, offering blessings of harmony and prosperity to families.
The NBK has a history of releasing artistic and culturally significant coins that showcase various themes, including historical events, national achievements, and cultural symbols of Kazakhstan. These coins not only celebrate the rich heritage of the country but also serve as educational tools, raising awareness of Kazakhstan’s history and accomplishments both locally and internationally.
One of the notable coin collections commemorates the 800th anniversary of the founding of the Jochi Ulus, featuring the mausoleum of Khan Jochi in the Ulytau Region. The design, created by Kazakh sculptor Gaziz Yeshkenov, pays tribute to this important historical site and includes a collage of coins from the Golden Horde era on the reverse side.
In addition to historical themes, the National Bank has also released coin series dedicated to animals that hold cultural significance in Kazakh life, such as the camel and the Kokbori (heavenly wolf). These coins highlight the importance of these animals in Kazakh culture, symbolizing prosperity, survival, and spiritual significance.
Another series of silver coins featuring the design of the Kazakh yurt, known as the kiyiz ui, in denominations of 500 and 5,000 tenge, is part of the Treasures of the Steppe collection. These coins represent the yurt’s role in the nomadic universe, capturing its expansive space and cultural importance.
Furthermore, the National Bank has celebrated sacred trees in different cultures, including the turanga tree revered by nomads, through a series of commemorative coins. Additionally, a unique coin series honors the Kazakh intellectual board game togyzkumalak, known for its role in developing logical thinking skills.
Since 1995, the National Bank of Kazakhstan has minted commemorative coins at the Ulba Metallurgical Plant in Oskemen, showcasing the country’s rich history and cultural heritage through numismatic art.
