“Khojaly: The Last Wedding” Documentary Premieres at Nizami Cinema Center

The premiere of the documentary film Khojaly: The Last Wedding at the Nizami Cinema Center has shed light on a tragic chapter in Azerbaijan’s history. Produced by Global Media Group and Report Information Agency, the film tells the heart-wrenching story of a wedding interrupted by the Armenian shelling of Khojaly 33 years ago.

The Khojaly genocide, which took place in 1992, is etched in the memories of many as one of the most brutal events of the 20th century, leaving a deep scar on countless lives and families. In Khojaly: The Last Wedding, the traditional wedding song Vaghzaly, which was left unfinished, resonates once more, symbolizing the return of joy and celebration to the devastated region. The film portrays the transformation of the Khojaly tragedy into a narrative of hope and renewal.

Featuring the groom from the incomplete wedding, Vasif Gafarov, his bride, Durdana Mammadova, and other wedding guests and relatives, the documentary follows their journey back to Khojaly years later to complete the ceremony. This visual representation mirrors the return of Khojaly’s residents to their homeland.

Inspired by a powerful black-and-white photograph from January 18, 1992, the film juxtaposes the past with the present by showcasing a colored version of the same photo taken in liberated Khojaly, where the victory flag now proudly flies. This imagery underscores the resilience and revival of the city.

Filmed in Khojaly and Aghsu, Khojaly: The Last Wedding was managed by Elnur Abdullayev, Chairman of Global Media Group. Directed by Yusif Alakbarzada with a screenplay by Niyam Shirinov, the producer of the film is Fuad Huseynaliyev.

Witness the powerful storytelling of Khojaly: The Last Wedding as it brings to light the tragic past and the hopeful future of a community torn apart by tragedy.
