Kyrgyz Migrants Struggling with Unemployment in Hungary
Despite Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s staunch opposition to migrants entering the European Union, official government data reveals that there are approximately 120,000 migrant workers currently in Hungary. These workers, mainly hailing from countries such as Ukraine, Serbia, Vietnam, and the Philippines, face various challenges and vulnerabilities while working in the country.
A recent investigation conducted by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) has shed light on the precarious situation many of these migrant workers find themselves in. These individuals are at risk of losing their jobs abruptly, leaving them without a source of income and, in some cases, without valid residency papers.
One such incident involved over 200 Kyrgyz workers losing their jobs at a factory owned by a subsidiary of the South Korean conglomerate, SK Group. This unfortunate event highlights the lack of job security and protection for migrant workers in Hungary.
As the debate surrounding migration and employment continues in Hungary, it is essential for the government to address the challenges faced by migrant workers and implement measures to ensure their rights and well-being are protected. It is crucial to create a safe and conducive environment for all workers, regardless of their nationality, to thrive and contribute positively to the Hungarian economy.
