Kyrgyz MP Envisions Virtually Free Electricity

Bishkek, January 14, 2025 – During a meeting of the Committee on Fuel and Energy Complex, Subsoil Use, and Industrial Policy of the Parliament, MP Zhenishbek Toktorbaev raised an important question to Energy Minister Taalaibek Ibraev regarding the cost of electricity in other countries.

Minister Ibraev shared that the electricity tariff for the population in Uzbekistan is 2.60 soms, in Ukraine it is 3.90 soms, in Azerbaijan it is 4.70 soms, in Kazakhstan it is 4.90 soms, and in Russia it is 6.60 soms. This information led MP Toktorbaev to express his surprise, stating that it seems like the population in Kyrgyzstan is getting electricity almost for free in comparison.

Currently, the electricity tariff for the population in Kyrgyzstan is 1.11 soms. However, it was announced that in May, the price of 1 kilowatt of electricity will increase to 1.37 soms. This rise in the price of electricity will have an impact on the population and their expenses.

As discussions continue regarding the cost of electricity and its implications on the population, it remains to be seen how this increase will be managed by the people of Kyrgyzstan. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
