Kyrgyz President Japarov Approves Biological Safety Law

Bishkek – On January 24, 2025, President Sadyr Japarov of Kyrgyz Republic signed the Law “On biological safety in the Kyrgyz Republic.” This new law aims to establish legal norms for biological safety in the country, providing state guarantees against potential risks of exposure to biological agents and the use of products from modern biotechnology.

The main objectives of the law include the development and use of biotechnology in compliance with safety measures to protect human health and the environment, comprehensive prevention of biological safety threats, and minimizing risks associated with pathogenic biological agents, toxins, and products of modern biotechnology.

It is important to note that Kyrgyzstan has been actively involved in international agreements related to biological safety. From 1996 to 2005, the country became a party to the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons and Their Destruction, as well as the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to the Convention on Biological Diversity.

This new law underscores the commitment of Kyrgyz Republic towards ensuring the safety and security of its citizens and environment in the face of evolving biotechnological advancements.
