Kyrgyzstan Implements Six-Month Ban on Chicken Egg Imports
Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan — As of May 1, 2025, the Kyrgyz government has enacted a six-month ban on chicken egg imports, a move announced by the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture and Processing Industry. This decision aims to bolster the country’s food security and stabilize market prices for food products.
The ministry indicated that no eggs from neighboring countries have been entered into the republic since February 10, emphasizing a focused approach to managing domestic poultry production.
Recent data reveals that Kyrgyzstan has transitioned from being an importer to a notable exporter of eggs. In the first quarter of 2025, the country exported approximately 8,812,800 eggs to Kazakhstan, marking a significant increase compared to the same period last year. Notably, imports decreased by 10,760,760 pieces.
The rise in domestic egg production coupled with competitive dynamics between large and small poultry farms in the market has led to this transformative phase. The Ministry of Agriculture highlighted that each rural family generally keeps about 30 to 40 chickens, boosting local productivity and diminishing the need for imports.
The ministry also noted that chicken meat sales are more lucrative, with over 91,000 tons entering the market annually. This trend is encouraging farmers to pivot towards chicken meat production rather than eggs.
While the Ministry of Agriculture aims to safeguard local producers, it acknowledged challenges in regulating the free movement of goods across the country’s regions.
As Kyrgyzstan navigates these changes, the government appears committed to ensuring the sustainability of its agricultural sector while balancing the dynamics of supply and demand within the market.
