Last Minute Magazine bids farewell to Nurhan Damcıoğlu!
Renowned Turkish artist Nurhan Damcioglu, who popularized the canto genre in Turkey, passed away on Monday evening in Izmir at the age of 82 due to heart failure. A commemoration ceremony was held for the artist at Izmir State Theater Konak Stage, where Damcioglu’s biography was read and a cine-vision for the artist was shown. Damcioglu’s niece also gave a speech, and at the end of the ceremony, the artist received a standing ovation for several minutes. Damcioglu was known for her energy and lively performances, as well as her special communication with her audiences.
Damcioglu first sang in the canto genre in 1969 and became Turkey’s first female Muslim canto player. Despite being put under control after the September 12 Coup, she continued her career in theater and eventually devoted herself entirely to canto. Damcioglu’s nephew, who is also an artist, spoke highly of his aunt, calling her “the bravest working woman in my life.”
Izmir Metropolitan Mayor Tunç Soyer and his wife Neptün Soyer attended the commemoration and expressed their condolences to Damcioglu’s fans, calling her “one of Turkey’s most beautiful and greatest artists.” Damcioglu’s body was buried in Doğançay Cemetery after the funeral prayer held at Beşikçioğlu Mosque. Damcioglu leaves behind a legacy in Turkish theater and music and will be dearly missed by her fans and loved ones.
