Ministry of Trade Imposes Heavy Fines on E-commerce Companies worth 230 Million Liras
Distance sales have become increasingly popular in the retail trade industry, offering consumers an easy, fast, and convenient method of shopping. However, the lack of physical interaction with products and sellers in distance sales can leave consumers vulnerable to exploitation. As a result, the Distance Contracts Regulation plays a crucial role in protecting consumer rights and ensuring they are fully informed about their purchases.
In response to consumer complaints received by the Ministry of Trade in 2024, inspections were carried out to address issues such as order cancellations without consumer consent, delayed delivery of products, and failure to refund canceled contracts. As a result of these inspections, 40 companies were found to have violated regulations and were fined approximately 230 million Turkish Liras. Additionally, 7 companies may face criminal charges related to fraud under the Turkish Penal Code.
The Ministry of Trade has emphasized its commitment to continued inspections to protect consumer rights and prevent unfair competition in the distance sales sector. It is essential for consumers to be aware of their rights and for companies to comply with regulations to ensure a fair and transparent shopping experience for all parties involved.
