Mongolia’s Vulnerability: Energy Security Concerns
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia’s capital, is facing a harsh winter exacerbated by chronic power shortages and energy rationing. This situation highlights the urgent need for modernized energy infrastructure in the city.
The aging Thermal Power Plant No. 3 (TPP-3), a coal-fired facility that provides 32% of Ulaanbaatar’s heat and 16% of the central region’s electricity, is struggling with frequent failures. These issues jeopardize the city’s energy security, particularly during critical months of the year.
In response to these challenges, Mongolia is considering partnering with Russia to modernize TPP-3. The cost of this project is estimated to be €1.3 billion, sparking debates about the cost-effectiveness of the investment, geopolitical dependencies, and long-term energy strategies.
It is clear that action needs to be taken to address Ulaanbaatar’s energy challenges and improve the reliability of its power supply. Modernizing energy infrastructure is essential to ensure the city’s energy security and to provide residents with a more stable and sustainable source of power.
