Mülkiyeli Poet Cemal Süreya: Art and Politics Workshop Begins
“Proprietary Poet Cemal Süreya” Art and Politics Workshop Commences at Eastern Mediterranean University
The “Proprietary Poet Cemal Süreya” Art and Politics Workshop, organized in collaboration with the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Faculty of Education and Faculty of Business and Economics, Ankara University Faculty of Political Sciences, Cyprus Property Owners Association, and Tangül Ünal Çağıner Children’s Aid Foundation, has officially begun.
The workshop, which will span over 2 days at the Acapulco Resort Hotel, will delve into the literary aspect of poet Cemal Süreya and his intricate relationship with politics.
During the opening ceremony, Professor Doctor Deniz Çiftçioğlu from EMU Faculty of Business and Economics, Professor Doctor Ahmet Pehlivan from EMU Faculty of Education, Ümit Gürtekin from Cyprus Property Owners’ Association, and Associate Professor Can Giray Özgül from Ankara University Faculty of Political Sciences delivered speeches. Additionally, İçim Çağıner Kavuklu, President of Tangül Ünal Çağıner Children’s Aid Foundation, shared insights into the foundation’s work.
EMU Rector Professor Doctor Hasan Kılıç highlighted Cemal Süreya’s dual role as both a prominent poet in the literary world and an active participant in political and social events. Erdal Özcenk, Chairman of the EMU Foundation Board of Directors, emphasized the symbiotic relationship between art and politics, drawing attention to the themes of love, compassion, and humanity in Süreya’s poetry.
Sibel Tatar, wife of President Ersin Tatar, commended the event organizers and stressed the importance of preserving the cultural heritage of poets and artists, as per Atatürk’s vision. Tomorrow’s program includes a Cemal Süreya Poems open mic event and the “Mülkiyeli Ünal Çağıner Memorial Meeting.”
Prior to the workshop, EMU and Tangül Ünal Çağıner Children’s Aid Foundation signed a cooperation protocol to enhance children’s education, collaborate on social responsibility initiatives, and bolster educational programs. The agreement was signed by EMU Rector Prof. Hasan Kılıç and Foundation President İçim Çağıner Kavuklu.
