“NATO to Establish Liaison Office in Tokyo”
NATO to Open Liaison Office in Tokyo, Strengthen Cooperation with Japan
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) plans to open a liaison office in Tokyo aimed at strengthening cooperation with Japan. This was announced by Ambassador Tomita at a press conference in Washington, where he serves. Tomita said that they are currently working in this direction.
Against the backdrop of pressing international issues, such as China’s growing influence, the Russia-Ukraine crisis, and North Korea’s missile threats, the G-7 summit this month will focus on the theme of strengthening the rule-based international order. Japan, hosting the summit in Hiroshima from May 19 to 21, will be the first non-Western country to host the G7 Leaders’ Summit.
Japan has been regarded as a partner country by NATO for some time. Kishida Fumio, the Japanese Prime Minister, participated in the NATO Leaders’ Summit in Madrid in June 2022 as the first Japanese prime minister to attend such a summit. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg emphasized stronger bilateral relations during his visit to Tokyo in January. Therefore, the summit in Hiroshima will be a way to further strengthen NATO’s partnership with its valuable partner, Japan.
