Minimum Wage Determination Commission Approves New Minimum Wage for Turkish Cypriots
The Minimum Wage Determination Commission recently approved a new minimum wage during a meeting where the objection of the Turkish Cypriot Employers’ Union was discussed. The new minimum wage will go into effect on September 1 and has been published in the Official Gazette.
During the meeting, the commission approved the figure that was previously agreed upon on September 18. The decision was supported by the state and worker parties, while the employer side also voted in favor, resulting in a majority decision.
As per the decision published in the Official Gazette, the minimum wage will now be set at 40,436 TL gross and 35,180 TL net per month. The gross hourly minimum wage is 233.28 TL, daily wage is 1,866.27 TL, and weekly wage is 9,331.38 TL.
Following the announcement of the new minimum wage, the Turkish Cypriot Employers’ Union expressed their dissatisfaction, describing the finalized minimum wage as a “fiasco.” They announced that they would be initiating a court process to ensure that the minimum wage is determined under healthy conditions and in accordance with the law.
In their statement, the union emphasized that their objection is not to the number itself, but to the process of determining the minimum wage. They believe that the uncontrollable increase in the minimum wage leads to a higher cost of living, which ultimately does not benefit the employees and has negative impacts on the economy.
Overall, the approval of the new minimum wage has sparked debates and discussions among various stakeholders, highlighting the complexities of setting a fair and sustainable minimum wage for Turkish Cypriot workers.
