“New Regulations Require Supermarkets to Offer Special Deals”

Hungarian supermarkets will have to introduce mandatory promotions for certain product groups starting from 1 June, according to Economic Development Minister Márton Nagy. The move is aimed at helping to reduce food inflation, which currently stands at between 22-24%. Compulsory special offers on specific items will encourage customers to shop around for better deals, thereby spreading demand more evenly. Nagy also stated that the government’s measures would help bring down food inflation, but acknowledged that it could not be reduced through monetary policy instruments. An online price monitoring database will also be introduced to allow shoppers to compare prices from different retail chains.
