Óbuda approves plans for new pedestrian bridge connecting key districts

Another milestone has been reached in the urban development of Óbuda, as the Budapest Metropolitan Municipality has given the green light for the construction of a new pedestrian bridge on Hajógyári Island. This bridge will connect the former shipyard to the Waterfront City residential district and the northern section of Óbuda Island, creating a new pedestrian link between parts of the city that were previously isolated.

The new bridge will seamlessly integrate with the ongoing Waterfront City project, which includes residential and commercial buildings while preserving important historical structures. The project is part of the Budai Promenade, a pedestrian corridor that aims to prioritize foot traffic and create a human-scaled urban environment.

Designed by the Hajnal Architectural Studio, the bridge will start at a central plaza near the former Óbuda distillery, crossing over the HÉV suburban railway line, the riverfront road, and a Danube branch before reaching Óbuda Island. The goal of the project is to improve pedestrian mobility and reduce the physical separation caused by existing transportation infrastructure.

In addition to its transportation significance, the bridge holds cultural importance as well. It will connect key historical and industrial heritage sites in the area, including the shipyard buildings, Hadrian’s Palace ruins, the former distillery’s main building, and the Harisnyagyár industrial complex.

Environmental considerations have been taken into account during the planning of the bridge, with a focus on tree conservation. A significant number of invasive trees on the island will not be preserved, and measures have been put in place to protect valuable tree groups during construction.

The bridge’s entry point on the Óbuda side will connect with local green spaces, such as the Kaszap István Park, creating a new communal meeting point for residents. The project reflects a commitment to community connectivity and the preservation of green spaces in the urban environment.

Overall, the construction of this new pedestrian bridge marks an important step towards creating a more connected and sustainable urban environment in Óbuda.
