Strengthening Ties: Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in Focus
In a significant gathering reflecting unity among Turkish states, Ziya Öztürkler, the President of the Assembly of the Republic, reaffirmed that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is an integral part of the Turkish World. He assured that TRNC will ultimately receive the recognition it rightly deserves.
The occasion took place during the 17th meeting of the Council of Elders of the Turkish States Organization (TDT), held in Kyrenia, under the chairmanship of Binali Yıldırım. This prominent delegation included figures such as TDT Secretary General Kubançbek Ömüraliyev, and elders from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan, indicating strong cross-border ties and support.
In his welcoming speech, Öztürkler expressed his pride in hosting the delegation: “It is a great honor to see you here.” He highlighted the significance of this meeting, noting that it serves as a message not only to Southern Cyprus but to the world at large.
He emphasized challenges faced by the TRNC, particularly regarding attempts by some Turkish states to withdraw consular representations in Southern Cyprus. Drawing attention to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s repeated calls at the United Nations General Assembly for TRNC recognition, Öztürkler described this as an "historical call" for the nation.
Öztürkler further highlighted the TRNC’s current status as an observer member in the Turkish States Organization, expressing confidence that it would soon achieve full membership. “With your support and efforts from our homeland, we will elevate the TRNC to full membership status,” he declared.
Binali Yıldırım, President of the Council of Elders, echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of strengthening TRNC’s place within the Turkish world. He noted, “Today, we face critical developments. While we encounter initiatives aimed at discrediting the TRNC, the meeting of the Turkish States Organization here sends a compelling message of unity.”
Yıldırım underscored that the TRNC’s observer member status signifies its close ties with the broader Turkish world and reflects solidarity in the Eastern Mediterranean, a vital region for Turkish states. He affirmed, “Together, we are stronger,” indicating a shared commitment to collaboration and mutual support.
Both leaders addressed the longstanding injustices faced by the TRNC, emphasizing resilience in the face of isolation and embargoes. Yıldırım concluded by reiterating the inviolable connection between the TRNC and Turkey, stating, “The TRNC is an unbreakable part of the Turkish World, and Türkiye’s guarantee is indisputable.”
The delegation’s visit ended with a tour of the General Assembly, reinforcing the bonds of respect and collaboration among these states. As the TRNC continues its journey toward greater recognition and unity, the meeting represents a pivotal moment in the ongoing dialogue within the Turkish world.
